Over a thousand Cranford residents board the Raritan Valley Line every morning. You come home to kids who need engagement, stimulation, and real activity and you need somewhere that doesn’t add more stress to your day. That’s the gap we built Exceptional Explorers to fill. Not just for the kids, but for you too.
Our dedicated parent lounge isn’t a folding chair near the exit. It’s a real space where you can sit, talk to another parent, or actually finish something while your child plays in a clean, enclosed environment we designed with an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Language Pathologist. Every zone was intentionally built to support speech and motor development not just to keep kids occupied.
And when the Rahway River rises and Nomahegan Park is out which, if you’ve lived in Cranford long enough, you know happens more than once a year you don’t need to scramble. Exceptional Explorers is open, indoors, and 15 minutes from Cranford via the Garden State Parkway. It’s the reliable option that doesn’t depend on the forecast or the river cooperating.
We opened Exceptional Explorers in Livingston in 2019 after two years of designing a space we couldn’t find anywhere else. Our founders an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Language Pathologist built every element, from the toddler zone to the interactive play structures, with developmental milestones in mind.
We serve children from 6 months through early elementary school age, and we’ve been featured editorially by Mommy Poppins not as a paid listing, but as a genuine recommendation from the most trusted parenting resource in the NJ/NY area. That kind of coverage doesn’t happen by accident.
For families coming from Cranford and the surrounding Union County area, we sit just off the Garden State Parkway in Livingston a drive that follows the same highway Cranford commuters already use every day. It’s not a special trip. It’s a quick, familiar route to somewhere your kids will actually want to come back to.
Open play at Exceptional Explorers runs on a time-slot system, which means capacity is capped before you arrive. Sessions run 9am 12:30pm and 1pm 4:30pm Monday through Thursday, with morning sessions on Fridays. You book your slot, you show up, and the space is never overcrowded by design.
Between sessions, we clean the entire facility so you’re not walking into whatever the previous group left behind. Open play is $24.95 per child. Adults get in free. If you’re bringing a sibling, there’s a discount for that too. Socks are required for everyone on the play floor, so pack a pair if you’re coming straight from Cranford or stopping in after school drop-off.
If you find yourself coming back and most families do our membership program gives you daily open play access for one, two, or three children, plus 10% off birthday parties and classes. For Cranford families who make the Parkway drive a regular habit, especially during the winter months when Nomahegan Park isn’t an option, membership turns a great visit into a reliable routine.

Cranford is a tight-knit community. The parents at your child’s birthday party are the same ones you see at school pickup, at the Canoe Club, at the downtown restaurants on South Avenue. The day matters. We host only one birthday party at a time every square foot of our facility is yours and your guests’ for the duration. No party happening in the next room, no shared hallways, no competing noise. That’s not a marketing line it’s how we physically designed our facility to operate.
Beyond open play and parties, we run enrichment programming that Cranford’s municipal Summer Playgrounds program doesn’t cover. That program starts at kindergarten completion which means every Cranford parent of a toddler or infant is on their own during the summer months. We offer sensory science classes led by an experienced science teacher, toddler art classes, and FIRST LEGO League robotics for older kids. It’s the kind of year-round, structured learning that Cranford parents who chose this town specifically for its schools tend to take seriously.
Our play structures are built with clean, non-toxic materials. We also maintain a physically separated toddler zone for children under three, so your crawler isn’t sharing space with kids twice their size. For families who care about what their youngest is touching, climbing, and inevitably putting in their mouth, that’s not a minor detail.
Giggles, which was located at 103 Miln Street in Cranford, has permanently closed. As of now, there is no dedicated indoor playground operating within Cranford’s borders. The Yelp listing is marked closed, and a “space available” sign confirmed the closure. For Cranford families who relied on Giggles for rainy-day play, toddler playdates, or birthday parties, that option is simply gone.
The closest purpose-built indoor play space for young children is Exceptional Explorers in Livingston, NJ approximately 15 to 20 minutes from Cranford via the Garden State Parkway. We serve children from 6 months through early elementary school age, with a dedicated toddler zone, time-slotted open play sessions, birthday party hosting, and enrichment classes. It’s not in town, but for Cranford families who remember what it was like to have a local option, we’re the nearest quality alternative and a significant step up from what Giggles offered.
We’re located at 277 Eisenhower Parkway, Suite 12-C, in Livingston, NJ roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Cranford depending on traffic. The most direct route is the Garden State Parkway northbound, which runs directly through Cranford at exits 136 and 137. From there, you connect to Route 24 and Eisenhower Parkway in Livingston. It’s the same highway Cranford commuters already use daily, so the route is familiar rather than a special detour.
You can also take Route 28 west out of Cranford and connect from there. Either way, this is not a cross-state journey it’s a short, straightforward drive that most Cranford families make in under 20 minutes. If you’re coming from neighborhoods like Indian Village near the Parkway on-ramp, or from the Roosevelt Manor and Fairview Manor areas closer to North Avenue, the routing is simple and consistent. We recommend calling ahead or checking our website to confirm your preferred session time before you leave, since open play runs on a time-slot system with capped capacity.
We serve children from 6 months through early elementary school age roughly up to age 12. Our programming is intentionally layered across different age groups rather than lumped together. We maintain a physically separated toddler zone for children under three, which keeps crawlers and very young toddlers away from the main play area where older kids are running and climbing. This is a deliberate design choice, not just a rope-off section, and it matters a lot for parents of infants and young toddlers who’ve had bad experiences at mixed-age venues.
For older kids in the elementary range, our STEM programming, sensory science classes, and FIRST LEGO League robotics team fill a different need structured enrichment rather than free play. Cranford’s Summer Playgrounds program begins at kindergarten completion, which means children who haven’t yet finished kindergarten have no municipal summer program to attend. We cover that gap directly, with programming that starts at 6 months and scales up through the elementary years.
This is more relevant for Cranford families than it might sound. The Rahway River runs through Cranford in a series of loops, and flooding along the river corridor is a documented, recurring reality not just a once-a-decade event. A flash flooding event in July 2025 affected Springfield Avenue and several surrounding streets, which is the same area where Nomahegan Park sits adjacent to Union County College. When the river is up, the park is often inaccessible or unsafe for young children, and Cranford’s outdoor options close down fast.
On those days, Exceptional Explorers operates exactly as it would on any other day indoors, climate-controlled, and fully staffed. Open play sessions run on the regular schedule regardless of what’s happening outside. Because sessions are time-slotted with capped capacity, you can book in advance and know your spot is confirmed before you leave the house. For Cranford parents who’ve been caught without a backup plan on a flooded-park day, having a reliable indoor destination 15 minutes up the Parkway is a practical answer to a genuinely recurring local problem.
Yes, we host birthday parties and the structure is meaningfully different from most venues in the area. We host only one birthday party at a time. That means when you book a party, our entire space is reserved for you and your guests. There is no other party happening simultaneously in a separate room, no shared common areas with strangers, and no noise bleeding in from someone else’s celebration. The facility is yours for the duration of your booking.
This matters particularly for Cranford families, where birthday parties tend to be community events the parents know each other, the kids go to school together, and the day carries real social weight. A chaotic multi-party venue where your child’s event gets lost in the shuffle doesn’t fit that context. We also offer a 10% discount on parties for members, which is worth factoring in if you’re already using our space regularly for open play. Specific party package details and pricing are available directly through our website or by calling 973-302-3194.
Cranford Township Public Schools consistently rank among the top districts in Union County it’s one of the main reasons families choose to live here. Parents in this community take education seriously from early childhood, not just once kids are school-age. Our enrichment programming aligns with that mindset. Sensory science classes are led by an experienced science teacher, not just a play facilitator. Toddler art classes are structured around developmental goals. And our FIRST LEGO League robotics team gives older elementary-age children a competitive, collaborative STEM experience that goes well beyond what most indoor play spaces offer.
These classes also fill a specific gap in Cranford’s calendar. The township’s Summer Playgrounds program requires children to have completed kindergarten, which leaves toddlers and preschool-age kids without a structured municipal option during the summer months. We run programming year-round for children starting at 6 months, which means Cranford families don’t have to wait until their child is school-age to access quality enrichment. Class schedules and sign-up details are available at exceptionalexplorers.com or by reaching our team at info@exceptionalexplorers.com.
