Fairfield has Kids Empire. Fairfield has FunTime Junction. Both are right there on Route 46, and plenty of families have walked through those doors. But if you’ve done that and come home feeling like your child burned some energy in a loud, crowded room while you stood near the wall for two hours that’s not a you problem. That’s just what those venues are built for.
We built Exceptional Explorers for something else. The entire space was designed from the ground up to support speech and motor development through play. That’s not a marketing angle it’s a design philosophy that shaped every zone, every surface, and every activity in the building. Your child isn’t just running around. They’re actually doing something.
For Fairfield families, this matters more than it might in a denser, more walkable town. Fairfield’s outdoor parks Gould Avenue Park, Liberty Field, Stevenson Park are genuinely good. But from November through March, they disappear. The fields freeze, the playgrounds empty, and the question of what to do with a two-year-old on a Tuesday in January gets very real, very fast. We’re open year-round, with time-slotted sessions, a dedicated toddler zone, and enrichment classes that give those winter months somewhere worth going.
We opened Exceptional Explorers in 2019 in Livingston about 10 to 15 minutes from Fairfield via Route 46 East after two cousins spent two years building the play space we genuinely couldn’t find anywhere in Essex County. Not a franchise. Not a corporate rollout. A specific vision, built carefully, by people who cared about what we were creating.
The travel theme running through our entire venue isn’t decoration. It’s the concept play zones inspired by global cultures, designed to spark curiosity about the world while kids climb, explore, and interact. It’s the kind of place that’s hard to describe until you walk in and realize it doesn’t feel like anything else you’ve seen.
We’ve been featured by Mommy Poppins, which if you’re a parent in northern New Jersey, you already know is about as credible a stamp as you can get in this space. We serve children from 6 months through age 12, with programming that ranges from open play to sensory science classes, toddler art, STEM, and FIRST LEGO League robotics. There’s also a parent lounge a real one, not a bench by the door where you can actually sit down while your child plays.
Open play at Exceptional Explorers runs in time-slotted sessions 9am to 12:30pm and 1pm to 4:30pm Monday through Thursday, with a morning session on Fridays. You book your slot in advance, which means the space is never oversold. Between sessions, we clean the entire venue. That’s not a policy footnote it’s the reason the place consistently looks and feels the way it does when you walk in.
Admission is $24.95 per child. Adults get in free. If you have more than one child, there’s a sibling discount. If you’re the kind of family that finds a place you love and wants to come back regularly, we offer a membership option for one, two, or three children that gives you daily open play access plus 10 percent off parties and classes.
For Fairfield families who are already making the Route 46 East drive for other errands, folding a regular Exceptional Explorers visit into the routine isn’t a stretch it’s just a stop on a road you already know.
For birthday parties, the process is just as straightforward. You book the venue, and on your child’s party date, the entire space is yours. No other party is happening simultaneously. Every square foot belongs to your guests. That’s not a standard feature at most venues it’s a deliberate policy, and it changes the entire feel of the day.
Ready to get started?
Open play is the foundation, but it’s not the whole picture. We run sensory science classes led by an experienced science teacher, toddler art classes, STEM programming, and a FIRST LEGO League robotics team. These aren’t afterthoughts bolted onto a play space they’re built into our regular schedule and designed for children who are ready for something more structured than free play.
For Fairfield families connected to the West Essex Regional School District a community explicitly described as home to professionals and business leaders with above-average expectations for education this matters. These are parents who are already investing in quality schooling and enrichment. A play venue with a credentialed science teacher running classes isn’t a novelty. It’s what you were looking for.
The physical space is designed with the same level of intention. Our play equipment slides, tunnels, climbing structures is built with clean, non-toxic materials. We maintain a physically separated toddler zone for the youngest children, keeping crawlers and under-3s away from the high-energy traffic of older kids. And our parent lounge is a genuine amenity: a space to sit, breathe, catch up on something, or just talk to another adult for an hour while your child is fully engaged.
Socks are required for all players, and the booking and waiver process is handled digitally before you arrive, so there’s no paperwork friction when you walk in the door.
Yes, and for most Fairfield families, it’s a shorter trip than it sounds. We’re located at 277 Eisenhower Parkway in Livingston roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Fairfield via Route 46 East or I-280 East. These are roads Fairfield residents already use regularly for shopping, dining, and commuting. You’re not navigating somewhere unfamiliar. You’re taking a familiar road a few extra exits.
What makes the drive worth it is that you’re arriving at something genuinely different from the two indoor play venues already on Route 46 in Fairfield. The travel-themed zones, the dedicated toddler area, the enrichment classes, the parent lounge none of that exists at the local options. For families who’ve already tried what’s in town and want something with more substance, the drive to Livingston stops feeling like a trip and starts feeling like a decision you made on purpose.
We serve children from 6 months through age 12. Our venue was specifically designed with the full age range in mind, which means we don’t just tolerate toddlers we were built for them. We maintain a physically separated toddler zone that keeps crawlers and very young children away from the higher-energy areas where older kids are running and climbing. That separation is structural, not just a painted line on the floor.
For parents of infants and toddlers, this is one of the more meaningful differences between Exceptional Explorers and the other indoor play options near Fairfield. At a venue like Kids Empire, the toddler section is specifically reserved for children still in diapers, while the rest of the space is a high-energy environment for older kids. At our venue, the design accounts for the full developmental range from the start. Our play equipment throughout is also built with clean, non-toxic materials relevant when you have a one-year-old who will absolutely put their hands on everything and then put their hands in their mouth.
Open play runs in two sessions on weekdays: 9am to 12:30pm and 1pm to 4:30pm Monday through Thursday, with a morning session available on Fridays. You book your slot in advance, and capacity is capped. That’s the whole point the time-slot model exists specifically to prevent the overcrowding that makes a lot of indoor playgrounds feel chaotic and hard to manage with young kids.
Between sessions, we clean the entire venue. So when you arrive for your slot, you’re walking into a space that’s been reset, not one that’s been running continuously since 9am with no break. For Fairfield parents who’ve experienced the open-floor, walk-in-anytime format at other venues and found it overwhelming, this is a meaningful structural difference. Your child actually gets to play not wait in line, not navigate a crowd, not get knocked over by a kid three times their size. The session format is what makes that possible, and it’s a deliberate design choice, not just a scheduling convenience.
We offer a range of birthday party packages designed to work with different themes and group sizes, with options that can be tied to your child’s current interests. For specific details on what’s included and what’s available on your preferred date reach out to us at info@exceptionalexplorers.com or call 973-302-3194.
What’s worth knowing upfront is that birthday parties at Exceptional Explorers are exclusive by policy. Only one party takes place at a time. That means on your child’s party date, the entire venue is yours the play zones, the party space, all of it. No other family is celebrating in the room next door. No strangers wandering through your event. This is not the standard setup at most venues, and it’s one of the primary reasons Fairfield families choose to make the drive to Livingston rather than booking something locally. The experience is genuinely private, and that changes the feel of the whole day for both kids and parents.
There’s a full enrichment calendar beyond open play. We run sensory science classes led by an experienced science teacher, toddler art classes, STEM programming, and a FIRST LEGO League robotics team for older children. These are scheduled programs with real instructional structure not supervised free time with a different name on it.
For families in the West Essex school corridor Fairfield, North Caldwell, Essex Fells, Roseland this kind of programming tends to land differently than it might elsewhere. These are communities where parents are already paying close attention to what their children are learning and how their time is being spent. A play venue that also offers credentialed science instruction and nationally recognized robotics programming fits naturally into how these families think about enrichment. You can check our current class schedule and sign up directly through our website, and the 10 percent membership discount applies to classes as well as parties if you’re a member.
It’s a different kind of venue, and that’s not a diplomatic way of avoiding the comparison it’s just accurate. Kids Empire on Route 46 is a large-format national chain with all-day admission and a high-energy entertainment focus. FunTime Junction on Fairfield Road has been around since 1994, has won Best of Essex multiple times, and runs a solid operation with laser tag, a bounce house, and time-slotted sessions. Both are legitimate options depending on what you’re looking for.
Exceptional Explorers occupies different territory. Our space was intentionally designed to promote speech and motor development not just activity. The travel-themed play zones, the non-toxic play equipment, the dedicated toddler separation, the enrichment classes with a credentialed science teacher, and the parent lounge are features that neither Fairfield venue offers. We were founded by two people with a specific vision, not built to a franchise template. If what you want is a big, loud entertainment center for an afternoon, Fairfield already has that. If you want a venue where the play actually means something developmentally and where you can sit down while it happens that’s what the drive to Livingston is for.
