Berkeley Heights families are outdoors people. The Watchung Reservation is right there. The trails, the parks, the open space it’s part of why you chose this town. But from November through March, when temperatures drop to the low 20s and the snow sets in, those options disappear fast.
A generic indoor alternative doesn’t cut it for families who are used to real experiences outside. That’s the gap Exceptional Explorers fills. The space was intentionally designed to promote speech and motor development not just give kids somewhere to run.
Travel-themed play zones, a dedicated toddler area that’s physically separated from the main space, STEM classes led by a credentialed science teacher, toddler art classes, and FIRST LEGO League robotics. It’s the kind of place that holds up to the standard Berkeley Heights families already have for everything else in their lives.
And when your child is 9 and your youngest is 18 months, you need a venue that actually works for both of them at the same time. Exceptional Explorers serves ages 6 months through 12 years which means one trip, one place, and nobody gets left out.
Exceptional Explorers opened in 2019 after two cousins spent two full years designing the space they wished already existed. Not a bounce house. Not a loud arcade with a few foam pits. A clean, modern, travel-themed indoor play space where every zone was chosen with developmental intent and where parents actually have somewhere comfortable to sit.
We’re located in Livingston, about 18 minutes from Berkeley Heights by way of I-78. We’ve been featured by Mommy Poppins the editorial outlet most New Jersey parents trust before they try anything new and have built a steady reputation for cleanliness, thoughtful design, and a birthday party experience that doesn’t feel like organized chaos.
In a town where Governor Livingston High School’s motto is “Explore, Excel, Engage,” it’s not a stretch to say Berkeley Heights families expect that same standard from where their younger kids spend their afternoons. We were built to meet it.
Open play runs in time-slotted sessions 9am to 12:30pm and 1pm to 4:30pm Monday through Thursday, with a morning session on Fridays. You book your slot in advance, which means the space is never oversold. There’s a capacity limit by design, so your kid isn’t waiting in line to use a slide or getting knocked over by a pack of older children.
Between sessions, we clean thoroughly not wipe down, clean.
When you arrive, children under 3 go straight to the dedicated toddler zone, which is physically separated from the main play area. Older kids have access to the full space active structures built with non-toxic materials, interactive elements, and themed zones that tie into global cultures and geography. If you’re visiting for an enrichment class, those run separately and are led by an experienced science teacher.
For birthday parties, the booking process is straightforward but the experience is entirely different from a typical party venue. We host one party at a time, which means the whole facility is yours. No other family’s party happening across the room. No sharing the space with strangers. Just your guests, your child, and the full venue for the duration of the event.

Berkeley Heights now has Neverland Fun on Springfield Avenue a genuinely well-run local option for children up to age 6. But it stops there. No enrichment classes. No programming for older kids. No parent lounge. No cafe. No membership. And when your child turns 7, or when you want a private birthday party with the whole venue to yourself, Neverland Fun doesn’t have an answer.
We do. Open play is $24.95 per child, with adults admitted free. Memberships are available for 1, 2, or 3 children and include daily open play access for any available session plus 10% off parties and classes which makes real financial sense for a Berkeley Heights family planning to visit regularly through the November-to-March indoor season.
Sensory science classes, toddler art classes, and FIRST LEGO League robotics round out our enrichment offerings.
Our parent lounge is worth mentioning separately, because it’s not an afterthought. It’s a real space designed for parents who need to decompress, catch up on work, or just sit somewhere comfortable while their kids play. For dual-career families in a town where 94% of working residents are in professional roles, that’s not a luxury. It’s the difference between a good afternoon and a great one.
We’re located at 277 Eisenhower Parkway in Livingston about 12 miles from Berkeley Heights, which works out to roughly 18 to 22 minutes via I-78. For casual open play on a random Tuesday, Neverland Fun on Springfield Avenue is obviously closer. But Neverland Fun serves children up to age 6 only, has no enrichment classes, no parent lounge, and no cafe.
If you have children older than 6, if you’re looking for STEM classes or FIRST LEGO League robotics, if you’re planning a birthday party and want the entire venue to yourselves, or if you simply want a parent lounge where you can actually sit and breathe the 18-minute drive on I-78 is an easy trade. Most Berkeley Heights families who make the trip once tend to come back, and our membership option makes regular visits even more practical for families who plan to go more than a couple of times a month.
We serve children from 6 months through 12 years old. The toddler area is physically separated from the main play space not just cordoned off with a sign, but genuinely separated so crawlers and younger toddlers aren’t sharing the same floor as bigger kids running full speed. That’s a deliberate design choice, and it matters.
Our active play equipment slides, tunnels, monkey bars is built with clean, non-toxic materials. That’s a specific claim, not a generic “safe environment” statement. For Berkeley Heights parents who research everything before committing to it, that distinction is worth noting. The age range also means families with a toddler and an older elementary-schooler can visit together without either child being stuck somewhere that doesn’t fit them.
Overcrowding is one of the most common complaints about indoor playgrounds in general, and it’s a legitimate concern. We run on a time-slotted, limited-capacity model you book a specific session in advance, and the number of children in that session is capped. We clean between sessions, not just spot-check.
This matters especially for Berkeley Heights families visiting during peak indoor season winter school breaks, teacher in-service days, and the stretch from December through February when the Watchung Reservation trails aren’t an option. Because you book a slot rather than walk in, you know what you’re getting before you arrive. No showing up after a 20-minute drive on I-78 to find the place wall-to-wall with kids. The session model is the structural answer to the overcrowding problem, not just a policy that sounds good on a website.
A few things stand out that you won’t find at most venues in the area. Our travel-themed concept play zones designed around global cultures and geography is unique. No other indoor playground in the region uses it. Our developmental design intent is also specific: the space was built to promote speech and motor development, not just burn energy. Every zone, every material choice, and every layout decision reflects that original goal.
Our enrichment programming is another real differentiator. Sensory science classes taught by a credentialed science teacher, toddler art classes, and FIRST LEGO League robotics aren’t add-ons they’re part of what we are. For Berkeley Heights families who hold their kids’ activities to a high standard, the combination of open play and genuine enrichment in one venue is genuinely hard to find anywhere else in Union County or the surrounding area.
We host one birthday party at a time. That’s our policy, and it’s the point. When you book a birthday party with us, the entire facility belongs to your family and your guests for the duration of the event. No other party happening on the other side of a divider. No shared lobby, no competing noise, no wondering whose balloon arch belongs to whom.
For Berkeley Heights parents who are used to doing things well and who have the standards to match this isn’t a small thing. We offer multiple party packages that can be tailored to your child’s interests. Specific package details and pricing are available directly through us, and members receive 10% off party bookings. If you’ve ever been to a birthday party at a venue where three other parties were happening simultaneously, you already understand why the one-party-at-a-time model exists.
It depends on how often you plan to visit, but the math works out quickly for families who go more than once or twice a month. Memberships are available for 1, 2, or 3 children and include daily open play access for any available session, plus 10% off parties and classes. Open play is $24.95 per child per session without a membership, so for a family with two kids visiting twice a week through a Berkeley Heights winter and winters here are genuinely cold, with temperatures regularly dropping into the low 20s from December through February the savings add up fast.
Beyond the financial side, there’s a practical benefit to having a reliable, pre-committed destination during the months when outdoor options in Berkeley Heights are limited. The Watchung Reservation trails, Chisholm Park, and the local playgrounds are great in spring and fall. But from November through March, having a membership with us means you always have a plan and your kids always have somewhere worth going.
